The Conflict Within begins with a question from James 4:1: “What causes fights and quarrels among you?” James points to something deeper than our circumstances. He reveals the conflict within us – the battle between our desires, our flesh, and the Spirit of God.
In this message, Pastor Dave walks through James 4:1-7 and explains why internal struggles often become external conflicts. Our desires can shape our attitudes, relationships, decisions, and priorities. When we allow the flesh to lead, jealousy, selfish ambition, pride, and division can take root. However, God calls us to a different way of living.
Paul describes this same struggle in Galatians 5. The flesh and the Spirit are in conflict with each other. While the flesh produces behaviors that damage our relationship with God and others, the Spirit produces love, joy, peace, patience, kindness, goodness, faithfulness, gentleness, and self-control. As followers of Jesus, we must learn to recognize this battle and choose to walk by the Spirit.
Pastor Dave also examines James’ warning about friendship with the world. Scripture repeatedly warns believers not to become controlled by worldly values and desires. We cannot allow the world to shape our identity, priorities, or thinking while expecting to grow closer to God. Instead, Romans 12:2 calls us to experience transformation through the renewing of our minds.
Throughout the message, Pastor Dave identifies three forces that work against Christians: the flesh, the world, and the devil. Each one creates a different kind of pressure, but James 4 gives us a clear response. We must submit ourselves to God, resist the devil, and walk in humility before the Lord.
The good news is that we do not face this battle alone. James reminds us that God gives more grace. When we humble ourselves and surrender our desires to Him, God meets us with the grace we need to overcome the conflict within.
The Conflict Within challenges us to look beyond the conflicts we see around us and examine what is happening inside our hearts. As we submit to God and keep in step with the Holy Spirit, He can transform our desires, strengthen our faith, and help us live in victory.
